LDT200x - Week 4 Activity: Creating a Lesson Plan using the UbD Model

Week 4 of my LDT200x course on Instructional Design Models went off well, although it was a bit rushed for me and I finished its activity quite late (which is why my blog this time is so late too)...

Anyways, Week 4 covered a new Instructional Design model called the Understanding by Design (or UbD) model.

The UbD model is a process of backward curriculum design, which mainly comprises of the following three steps:

1. Identifying the Desired Outcome

2. Determining Assessment Evidence

3. Planning Learning Experiences and Instruction

For our Week 4 activity, learners needed to create a lesson plan for any of the below given learning scenarios, using a UbD template provided in the course.

The three scenarios provided were:

Scenario 1: Workforce Learning

Goal: Your goal is to implement a new policy regarding Internet use in the workplace.

Role: You are an instructional designer in a large company of office professionals

Audience: The audience is a large customer service group taking inbound call and logging orders into a web-based system.

Task: Complete the template applying UbD standards to the information provided in this scenario.

Scenario 2: Transactional Learning

Goal: Your goal is to implement a new point of sale system at the restaurant you work.

Role: You are a manager in charge of training the staff of the new POS system.

Audience: The audience consists of teenagers and young adults working in the food service industry.

Task: Develop a resolution to implement the POS system ASAP and enable features like order accuracy, inventory control, and sales tracking. Complete the template applying UbD standards to the information provided in this scenario.

Scenario 3: Technology-Based Learning

Goal: Your goal is to help elementary teachers at your school identify technology components for classroom use.

Role: You are an instructional technologist tasked with developing a program to train teachers on implementing technology-based learning.

Audience: Elementary school teachers (K-6) with a diverse technology understanding and skill set.

Task: Develop an implementation plan for teachers to select and apply technology assets for student learning. Complete the template applying UbD standards to the information provided in this scenario.

For my activity, I chose the third scenario, i.e., Technology-Based Learning. My lesson plan for this activity can be found at this link.

I think the reason why I chose this link was because I could connect the most with it, having mainly worked in academic settings, for the most part of my career. I thoroughly enjoyed creating the lesson plan, and do hope you all find it interesting as well.

Thanks!
